Immediate (now to Q3 2026)

  • Assess your data governance maturity. Work IQ APIs and Scout are only as trustworthy as the data they access. Sensitivity labelling, permission hygiene, and Purview configuration are the foundations everything else depends on.
  • Evaluate your Copilot deployment. Scout and MAI-Thinking-1 will integrate directly with existing Copilot infrastructure. Organizations with strong Copilot adoption are positioned to transition to agentic capabilities faster.
  • Request Frontier access for Scout. The learning curve for autonomous agents is real. Early access now means institutional knowledge ahead of general availability.
  • Begin Work IQ API evaluation. With GA on 16 June 2026, this is available to explore now. Identify two or three high-value agent use cases in your organization and begin proof-of-concept work.

Short-Term (Q3 to Q4 2026)

  • Develop an AI governance framework. Autonomous agents require clearer policies than assisted AI tools. Acceptable use, accountability, audit trails, and human-in-the-loop protocols need to be defined before broad deployment.
  • Identify your Scout and agent use cases. Not every role benefits equally. Prioritise the highest-volume, highest-context roles where Scout’s proactive capabilities will deliver measurable time savings.
  • Evaluate MAI-Thinking-1 for your AI workloads. Assess whether the price-performance profile and data provenance advantages make it a better fit than current models for specific enterprise applications.

Strategic Horizon (2027 and beyond)

  • Plan for agent-first architecture. Project Solara signals the direction of enterprise devices. Digital workplace strategies that assume an app-centric interaction model should be reviewed against this trajectory.
  • Build citizen agent development capability. Just as citizen development democratised Power Platform, citizen agent development will democratize agentic AI. The organizations who invest in this capability now will move faster than those who centralize it in IT.
  • Rethink the employee experience platform. As agents proactively surface the right information at the right time, the employee experience will increasingly shift from employees going to find things, to information coming to them.

Microsoft Scout

What Is Scout?

Microsoft Scout is the company’s first Autopilot agent, a new category that goes beyond responding to prompts. Unlike Copilot, which acts when asked, Scout acts without being asked. It is an always-on, proactive agent that works continuously in the background, learning how you work and taking action on your behalf. Consider it an autonomous colleague, one that works continuously in the background, never misses an action item, and always remembers what you asked it to prioritize.

Built on OpenClaw and Work IQ

Scout is built on OpenClaw, Microsoft’s enterprise-adapted version of the open-source agent framework, with Work IQ serving as its context engine. Where other agents start fresh with every interaction, Scout builds an evolving model of how you work: your priorities, your relationships, your communication patterns, your deliverables.

This context accumulates over time, meaning Scout becomes more effective the longer it operates in your environment. It lives across the tools you already use:

  • Microsoft Teams and Outlook: for communication and conversation
  • OneDrive and SharePoint: for file access and content generation
  • Calendar and scheduling: for time and meeting management
  • Device-local actions: for tasks on your own machine

What Scout Actually Does

Scout’s announced capabilities at Build 2026 include:

  • Proactive meeting preparation: generates briefing materials, relevant documents, and talking points before each meeting without being prompted
  • Scheduling conflict resolution: identifies conflicts, proposes resolutions, and coordinates across time zones autonomously

  • Built-in controls allow IT administrators to set boundaries on what Scout can access and what actions it can take.

Availability

Scout is currently available through Microsoft’s Frontier program, the early adopter initiative for experimental Microsoft products. Access requires a GitHub Copilot subscription. A broader rollout timeline has been committed for later in 2026.

The MAI model family

A Strategic Shift in Microsoft’s AI Supply Chain

Perhaps the most strategically significant announcement at Build 2026 was a fundamental strategic shift in Microsoft’s AI posture. Microsoft announced a family of seven in-house AI models under the MAI brand, developed by the Microsoft AI Superintelligence Team.

For years, Microsoft’s AI capabilities have been powered primarily by its partnership with OpenAI. The MAI family signals Microsoft’s intent to develop and own foundational AI capabilities, reducing single-vendor dependency and creating a more competitive, enterprise-grade AI supply chain.

This is a move towards resilience and platform strength, and that benefits every enterprise building on Microsoft.

MAI-Thinking-1: The Flagship Reasoning Model

The headline model in the MAI family is MAI-Thinking-1, Microsoft’s first in-house reasoning model. Its architecture and performance make it directly relevant to enterprise digital workplace applications:

  • Architecture: Sparse Mixture of Experts design with 35 billion active parameters and approximately one trillion total parameters. The sparse architecture means the model activates only the components relevant to each request, delivering frontier-level capability without frontier-level compute cost.
  • Context Window: 256,000 tokens, large enough to process extensive documents, long agent traces, and complex multi-step workflows without chunking or stitching.
  • Training Data: Trained from scratch with zero distillation on commercially licensed data. No transfer from OpenAI or any third-party model family. This is a critical differentiator for regulated industries with strict data provenance requirements.
  • Performance: 97% on AIME 25 (general-purpose reasoning). 53% on SWE-Bench Pro (coding), matching Claude Opus 4.6, one of the most capable models available. In independent blind evaluations, human raters preferred MAI-Thinking-1 over Claude Sonnet 4.6 on overall quality.
  • Enterprise Design: Supports function calling, multi-layered instruction following, and extended agent reasoning. Specifically designed for the types of deep-context, multi-step tasks that enterprise workflows require.
  • Pricing: $5 per million tokens (text input) / $8 per million tokens (image input). Designed to be economically viable for high-volume, always-on enterprise workloads.

The Broader MAI Family

MAI-Thinking-1 is the flagship, but it sits within a family of seven models spanning multiple modalities. The full MAI family, available through Azure AI Foundry, includes models for:

  • Text reasoning and generation (MAI-Thinking-1 leads this category)
  • Image understanding and generation
  • Voice synthesis and recognition
  • Speech processing

Also announced: Web IQ, an AI-first web search stack that is model-agnostic and MCP-native, returning relevant search passages at nearly 2.5x the speed of competing alternatives. Web IQ is designed for agents that need real-time web context integrated into their reasoning.

What This Means for Enterprise AI Strategy

For organizations building on Azure and M365, the MAI family has three immediate implications:

  1. More choice on price-performance. MAI-Thinking-1 competes on performance with frontier models at a price point designed for scale. Organizations can route complex reasoning tasks to MAI without OpenAI-level costs.
  2. Cleaner data provenance. For financial services, healthcare, and public sector organizations with compliance requirements, a model trained entirely on commercially licensed data from scratch is a meaningful governance advantage.
  3. A more competitive ecosystem. Microsoft fielding its own models changes its leverage in the AI market, which ultimately benefits enterprise customers through better pricing, faster innovation, and reduced platform risk.

Work IQ APIs

The Intelligence Layer Beneath Everything

Work IQ is the context engine that makes agents like Scout genuinely intelligent in an enterprise context. Announced at Build 2026 and reaching general availability on 16 June 2026, Work IQ APIs give agents access to a continuously updated semantic understanding of how your organization actually works.

Work IQ processes and understands:

  • Email and calendar context
  • Meeting recordings and transcripts
  • Teams chat history and channels
  • Files and documents across SharePoint and OneDrive
  • People relationships and collaboration patterns

What Makes Work IQ Different

The critical architectural insight is this: instead of requiring agent developers to teach their agents hundreds of data-specific tools and APIs, Work IQ collapses this into just 10 generic tools with progressive disclosure through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). This dramatically reduces the complexity of building enterprise agents that are genuinely context-aware.

Work IQ is the semantic intelligence layer that transforms raw M365 data into business context an agent can genuinely reason over, turning data access into real understanding.

Digital Workspaces and Governance

Work IQ introduces the concept of Digital Workspaces: governed, tenant-bounded environments where agents can store data, files, memory, and intermediate reasoning outputs as they work through complex tasks. This is a foundational capability for autonomous agents that need to maintain state across extended workflows.

The governance model is equally important. A new cost management dashboard in the Microsoft 365 admin centre allows IT administrators to:

  • Monitor AI credit consumption across agents, users, and services
  • Configure billing between prepaid or pay-as-you-go Copilot Credits
  • Set spending limits at tenant, group, and user level
  • Review and approve credit requests from users

Project Solara

The Platform That Comes After Apps

Project Solara is Microsoft’s most forward-looking announcement at Build 2026, a chip-to-cloud platform designed not around applications, but around agents. It represents Microsoft’s vision for the next era of enterprise computing, where the interaction model shifts from ‘software you open’ to ‘intelligence you invoke.’

Microsoft previewed two hardware concepts:

  • A wearable smart badge with 5G connectivity, voice and vision capabilities, a glanceable touchscreen display, and a camera, designed for mobile, frontline, and field workers
  • A stationary ambient device with multimodal capabilities (voice, vision, and agent access), designed for office and desk environments

Enterprise Pilots Already Underway

Project Solara is already in motion. Enterprise pilots are underway with AccuWeather, Best Buy, CVS Health, Levi’s, Target, and others, spanning retail, healthcare, and consumer services. These are organizations with large frontline workforces where agent-first interaction models could deliver significant operational value.

The long-term implications for digital workplace strategy are significant. As agent-first computing matures, the architecture of the employee experience (intranets, portals, and apps) will naturally evolve alongside it, and organizations who plan ahead will be in a stronger position to shape that shift.

Our view: Project Solara is the key platform to watch heading into 2027. The directional signal is clear, and technology leaders who start building towards agent-first architecture today will be well positioned when it matures.

Additional Announcements

Several additional announcements at Build 2026 are relevant to digital workplace and infrastructure modernization:

  • Azure Cobalt 200 VMs: New VMs delivering a 50% performance improvement, fully optimized for modern agentic AI workloads. Relevant for organizations running large-scale AI agent deployments on Azure.
  • GPU-Accelerated Fabric Data Warehouse: Microsoft announced up to 7x performance improvement over major competing cloud warehouses across reporting, application, and AI-driven analytics workloads, a significant development for organizations running Power BI and Fabric at scale.
  • Majorana 2 Quantum Chip: An average qubit lifetime of 20 seconds, 1,000x greater reliability than the previous generation, and a stated pathway to one million qubits on a single chip. Quantum computing remains a long-horizon development for most enterprises, but Microsoft’s trajectory is accelerating faster than most analysts projected.

Microsoft Build 2026 marks a genuine inflection point. The digital workplace is being architecturally redesigned around agents that understand context, act proactively, and operate within enterprise-grade governance frameworks.
