Made In Canada: How A Product Scanning App Built in 72 Hours Amassed 40,000 Downloads and Became a Media Sensation
Discover how Punchcard Systems used AI-powered vibe sprints to publicly build Check the Label—a community-driven mobile product scanning app that helps consumers identify products made in Canada—transforming a weekend prototype into a nationwide sensation within days.

Background
In January 2025, just hours after being sworn in as President of the United States, Donald Trump announced his administration would be imposing tariffs on imports from Canada— America’s closest ally and largest trading partner.
In the first three months of Trump’s second term, the on-again, off-again tariffs—and threat of annexation—have upended diplomatic and historic relationships, rocked global markets, and cast a shadow of uncertainty and volatility across the entire world.
Coupled with the ongoing cost-of-living crisis and never-ending battle with inflation, more and more Canadians are now intentionally seeking out domestic goods as an act of solidarity in the face of our trade war with our neighbours to the south.
As trade tensions continue to escalate, a new wave of Canadian patriotism has emerged through the ‘buy local’ movement in service of economic self-preservation and national pride. Ultimately, it has inspired Canadian consumers to rally around the ‘Buy Canadian’ movement.

But what does it actually mean to ‘Buy Canadian’?
Picture this: you’re standing in a crowded aisle at your local grocery store, staring at an endless sea of products stacked high above your head. You reach for an interesting item to learn about where this product was made. You stare blankly at the confusing product label. Product of Canada? Made in Canada? What does it all mean?
If this sounds familiar to you, then you’re certainly not alone. In a global economy where most products cross multiple borders along their journey from raw materials to finished goods, it can be extremely difficult to know and understand where your favourite products come from.
Canadian consumers face a labyrinth of complex and misleading product labels with vaguely familiar terms that sound similar but actually mean very different things. What makes a product truly ‘Canadian’ isn’t always as black and white as it may seem.
It is this lack of universal transparency in product labelling that inspired us to create Check the Label to help Canadian consumers better understand where the products they buy actually come from.

What We Built
Recognizing increased threats to our national economy, our Partner and Chief Technology Officer, Estyn Edwards, sprung to action and built a working prototype of Check the Label in just 72 hours over the course of a weekend.
The following Monday, Estyn presented his proof of concept to our team and invited anyone who was interested to help bring the app to market. Driven by a collective desire to support fellow Canadian consumers and businesses, a multi-disciplinary team of Punchcardigans mobilized together to launch the web app in just a few business days. In less than 2 weeks, the Check the Label mobile app was live and available for download on iOS in the Apple App Store and on Android in the Google Play Store.

Within days of launching the mobile app, Check the Label became a media sensation, garnering over 83 million impressions across more than 150 media outlets—from national publications like the National Post and Financial Post to public broadcasters like CityTV, Global News, and CBC to regional newspapers spanning the country from Vancouver to Halifax.
While Check the Label prompted important conversations about Canadian innovation and self-reliance, it also captured the hearts and minds of Canadians because of the community-driven nature of the platform. Unlike traditional software, Check the Label provided an opportunity for consumers to actively participate in the development of the technology in real-time.
By leveraging crowdsourced data and building the tool in public, we invited consumers to provide real-time feedback and user test alongside us to help shape the next evolution of the app.
Rather than try to perfect every feature behind closed doors, we launched our minimum viable product (MVP) within days to share openly with our community. This allowed us to successfully build Check the Label iteratively—constantly incorporating feedback along the way—while testing in the real world before investing significant resources in a project that had yet to be validated by the public.
Beyond the media attention, Check the Label is the perfect example of our team’s commitment to developing innovative digital solutions that address real-world challenges and drive meaningful change. It’s tangible proof that our process works—utilizing emerging technology to build digital solutions that consumers need—all while validating from real users on how to make solution better.
